Pediatric Speech Therapy for Tongue Tie
in Charlotte & Huntersville, NC
Is your childâs tongue tie making it difficult for them to speak clearly? Or is your child hard to understand, even though their tongue tie was surgically released as a baby?
At Little Wonders Pediatric Therapy, our licensed speech therapists help children with tongue tie build the oral strength and coordination needed for clearer speech and more confident communication.
What Is a Tongue Tie?
A tongue tie, also known as ankyloglossia, occurs when the thin piece of tissue under the tongue, called the frenulum, is shorter, tighter, or thicker than usual. In infants, a tongue tie is often first noticed due to feeding challenges. Later, as children begin developing speech, a tongue tie can affect how clearly they can produce sounds or coordinate tongue movements for speech.
A tongue tie is present at birth and can range from mild to more noticeable. In some cases, it is surgically released to improve tongue movement. Even after a release, some children may still benefit from speech therapy to support clearer, more confident communication.
How Can a Tongue Tie Affect Your Childâs Speech?
Children with a tongue tie may face several challenges related to speech and language development. These may include:
- Having difficulty producing sounds such as âtuh,â âduh,â âluh,â or âruhâ
- Speaking with a lisp
- Struggling with early feeding challenges that may later affect speech muscle strengthÂ
- Having trouble moving the tongue quickly or smoothly during speech
- Feeling frustrated or less confident during communication
