Does your child often become frustrated when trying to explain their thoughts and needs? Or do they frequently ā€œtune outā€ when spoken to? These may be signs that your child is experiencing challenges with expressive language, receptive language, or both.

At Little Wonders Pediatric Therapy, our pediatric speech therapists help your child strengthen their ability to understand language and express themselves clearly so they can feel heard, understood, and actively participate in conversations at home, school, and with peers.

What Are Receptive and Expressive Language Disorders?

Communication involves both understanding language and expressing thoughts.

When a child has difficulty understanding the information they hear, they may be experiencing a receptive language disorder. Their hearing may be fine, but they struggle to process words, follow directions, or make sense of what is being said.

When a child has difficulty putting thoughts into words or sentences, they may be experiencing an expressive language disorder. This can make it hard to share ideas, describe events, or communicate basic needs, often leading to frustration.

Some children experience challenges in both areas, while others have difficulty in only one.

Signs of Receptive and Expressive Language Difficulties

Your child may struggle with receptive language if they:

  • Have difficulty following multi-step directions
  • Repeat questions instead of answering them
  • Give answers that are unrelated to the topic of conversation
  • Appear to ā€œtune outā€ when sentences are long or complex

Your child may struggle with expressive language if they:

  • Say fewer words than expected for their age
  • Use vague language like ā€œthingā€ or ā€œthatā€ instead of specific words
  • Struggle to combine words into sentences
  • Become frustrated when they cannot express their needs

How Speech Therapy Helps

At Little Wonders Pediatric Therapy, our pediatric speech therapists help your child connect understanding and expression through play-based therapy tailored to their needs.

We help your child better understand directions and questions so they can respond more clearly at home and school, while also building vocabulary and sentence structure so they can express their thoughts and communicate more effectively. As these skills develop, your child can participate more easily in everyday interactions and express their ideas with greater clarity.
