It’s common for your child to stumble over words as they learn to communicate. But when your child gets “stuck” on certain sounds, or their thoughts move faster than their mouth can keep up, they may be experiencing stuttering or cluttering.

At Little Wonders Pediatric Therapy, our pediatric speech therapists help your child experiencing stuttering or cluttering speak clearly and smoothly so they can be more easily understood and communicate with greater confidence.

What Are Stuttering and Cluttering?

Stuttering and cluttering are both fluency disorders, meaning they affect the smooth, natural flow of speech.

With stuttering, your child may repeat sounds or words, stretch out sounds, or experience moments where they know exactly what they want to say, but the sound just will not come out. These moments can feel effortful, and you may notice your child working hard or pushing to get their words out.

With cluttering, your child may speak very quickly or in a disorganized way that makes their message hard to follow. They might leave out syllables, run words together, or jump between ideas mid-sentence, which can make it difficult for others to understand what your child is trying to say.

Signs of Stuttering or Cluttering in Children

If your child is experiencing stuttering or cluttering, they may:

  • Get stuck on certain sounds or words
  • Repeat sounds, syllables, or words
  • Speak very quickly or unevenly
  • Leave out sounds or syllables in longer words
  • Become tense while speaking
  • Lose their train of thought mid-sentence
  • Feel frustrated or self-conscious when talking
  • Avoid speaking in class or social situations

How Speech Therapy Helps with Stuttering and Cluttering

At Little Wonders Pediatric Therapy, our pediatric speech therapists use play-based speech therapy tailored to your child’s communication needs. Therapy helps your child speak at a more comfortable, steady pace, build awareness of speech patterns, and organize thoughts before speaking.

Sessions focus on supportive, guided practice that helps your child feel less tense while speaking. Parents and caregivers are given effective at-home strategies to support your child’s progress and help them feel confident in everyday conversations.
